Founded in 1933 as the American Military History Foundation—later renamed the American Military Institute in 1939 and, in 1990, the Society for Military History—the Society is dedicated to fostering and advancing the study of military history.
Today, with more than 3,200 members, the Society brings together some of the world’s most distinguished scholars, soldiers, and citizens with a shared interest in the field.
The Society is guided by its constitution and led by officers and trustees who meet annually to determine policy, procedures, and strategic direction. Our regional coordinators facilitate and support Society activities worldwide, and our various committees make the Society the vibrant organization that it is.
Our members include leading researchers and practitioners across all eras of military history. Their work is featured in books, articles, policy papers and presentations that reach a global audience, but nothing comes close to the Society's Annual Meeting for sheer exposure to the latest research. These gatherings are both intellectually stimulating and collegial, and we warmly invite you to join us.
